Active Drawing

This project responded to the brief of exploring the idea of a computer program as an active partner within the drawing process, reinventing the concept of design as the user isn’t in total control of the project. This manipulation of the visual output creates designs that users cannot anticipate the visual outcome as they are limited in the control they are given.

My Inspiriation was based off of visual effects from an online game. When different ammunition was set off, a swirl of different colours and shapes appreaed on screen. The concept of different pieces moving around the screen inspired me to create this piece. Creating a design tool that is unpredictable with different shapes and colours creates an unusual user experience, however an addicting one as it never really has a final form.

This exerience has no limit on age or demographic, as all people are able to interact and enjoy the experience. This gave me the confidence to explore different design opportunities through code, and explosed me to the p5.js programming tool.

The Testing Period whilst creating the final interaction

More About My Projects

The project requested was for an interactive simulation for an online news-site that could be displayed on web and mobile devices. The upcoming article was about the power of data journalism, focusing on user engagement with the interactive piece through both visual and audio ques. The user can engage with the piece through keyboard and mouse inputs.

I decided to create a simulation of the flower life cycle, displayed bees, rain and flowers growing as the user interacts with the design. This design is targeted to a younger age demographic, by relating the styling of items to be like those off of popular cartoons. I included both visual and audio ques, to maintain engagement with children whilst displayed the lifecycle of the garden in a quick and appealing way.

I enjoyed using code to create this piece as it helped me understand how to develop movement in a more limitless environment filled with creative freedom. This experience was one of the first times I have developed a project like this, and I further developed my skill set in creative coding.

Creative Coding, Assessment 2, DXB211, 2021

  • Playing In The Garden

This is my final assessment within creative coding, as displayed in the prototype above. Here is the ability to interact with it yourself.

  • Recombination Effect

This piece was also apart of the first assignment. This piece allows users to create a collage, combining different backgrounds to create a unique world.

  • Moveable Type

This was the final piece of assessment 1 within creative coding, where the objective was to create moveable type, including time elements, which I believed was the most challenging brief.
